I use guitar method books when they provide useful structure, but I do not require every student to follow one method from beginning to end. Depending on the student’s age and goals, I may teach through a combination of:

Teenagers often have strong musical preferences and particular songs they want to learn. I welcome their suggestions and use their interests to develop technique, rhythm, music reading, and musical understanding. When a requested song is too difficult, we can simplify part of it or work toward it as the student develops the necessary skills.

Adults can begin piano or guitar with no previous musical experience. I also welcome adults who studied music earlier in life and would like to begin playing again.
Lessons can focus on reading music, playing favorite songs, understanding chords, improving technique, accompanying singing, songwriting, or simply enjoying the experience of making music.
Adult students do not need an unlimited amount of time to practice. We can establish realistic goals and assignments based on your schedule.

A piano that needs tuning, a keyboard that lacks appropriate features, or a guitar that is uncomfortable to play can make learning unnecessarily difficult. When I notice an instrument-related issue, I can explain it and suggest practical options.
Because I travel between appointments, lesson times are coordinated geographically. I may serve your neighborhood but not have an opening at your requested time. When possible, I will let you know whether another day or time could fit my route.
