About David Alcorn

Music has been an important part of my life since I began taking formal piano lessons at the age of nine. At thirteen, I started studying guitar with guitarist Lori Corey. I continued lessons with Lori for the next eight years while also studying composition and songwriting.

My high school years were spent at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA). There, I continued my education in the arts, learning multiple instruments and performing in numerous high school productions.

In 1998, I enrolled at San Diego State University to study music. I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 2000.

My Teaching Experience

I have been performing and teaching piano and guitar in the San Diego area for more than 25 years. During that time, I have worked with children, teenagers, and adults at a variety of experience levels.

I understand that every student has different interests, abilities, and reasons for wanting to learn music. Some students want to build a strong foundation in music reading and theory, while others are especially motivated by learning favorite songs. I adapt my lessons to each student while helping them develop practical skills, confidence, and a better understanding of music.

My goal is to make lessons encouraging and enjoyable while helping each student make steady progress. As students develop their abilities, I invite them to suggest songs and musical styles they would like to explore. I have found that students are often more motivated to practice when they feel a personal connection to the music they are learning.

Performing, Songwriting and Recording

In addition to teaching, I have experience performing, composing, songwriting, recording, and producing original music. My recorded work includes the Alcorn/Woods album Forever and Killing Time Music’s A Way Out.

This creative background allows me to help students look beyond simply playing the correct notes. Depending on their interests, we can explore chords, song structure, improvisation, composition, and the process of turning musical ideas into complete songs.
